  1. He was assigned as a scout/observer to the 422nd Regiment, 106th Infantry Division and in September 1944 shipped out to Europe. Sent to the line near St Vith, Belgium, Paul’s unit was overrun by the German offensive in December 1944, and with hundreds of other he was captured by the Germans on 21 December 1944.
  2. Paul spent the next four months as a POW in Germany, at camps IV-B (Mühlberg), VIII-A (Görlitz) and, after a 32-day march, XI-B (Fallingbostel). Conditions steadily worsened, and hunger and disease claimed the lives of many. Paul was finally liberated when advancing British troops overran camp XI-B on 16 April 1945. Paul was evacuated to hospital, first in England and then to the US; he spent the time until his discharge in March 1946 in various medical facilities.

  1. Caught out in the open near the mess hall when a shell exploded and a piece of shrapnel hit him just underneath his helmet killing him instantly . His twin sister, a Red Cross Volunteer was just a few miles away and received word of his death at St. Vith.
  2. Several days before he left Boston for England, John Pitts met his brother. Neither knew the other was in Boston. They met only by chance.
  3. Two days before he died, John Pitts met his sister, who worked for the Red Cross – stationed in Liege. Upon spotting one of the Division's vehicles in the town she set out to find her brother. It took several days, but on December 14 she arrived at Bn. Hq. The two were able to spend several hours together. Fate allowed few men such last‑minute farewells with their loved ones.

My heart is broken. America lost a Hero and I lost my Hero! David, my fiance’ and I were with dad at his bedside holding his hand when he took his last breath. Dad wanted me to share with all of you, the arrangements for his celebration of life. May his memory be for a blessing and let us say AMEN!

    With love and gratitude,

    1. Killed as a POW 12/23/1944 in an accidental rail yard bombing by RAF in Limberg, Germany. CUB 01/1995,
    2. Lt Leonard Prosnick was Headquarters Platoon Leader. Viewed as an overgrown kid, he acted more like a middle-schooler than an officer – that is until the chips were down and the battle began. He proved to be a brave man. Lt Prosnick also happened to be Jewish. American dog-tags listed religious preference which isn’t an issue unless you were a POW in WWII Germany. All Jews were warned to get rid of their dog tags when they became POW’s so Jerry didn’t know their religion. I can’t speak for other units but all non-Jewish POW’s in Recon threw our dog tags away too – partly we did it to support the Jewish soldiers in the 106th and partly we just wanted to annoy the German Guards.

    2. Charles volunteered to join the Army after completing high school and was selected for the officers training school beginning of the school year in 1943. Due to the war this program was closed, and he was transferred to the infantry where he would serve as a machine gunner with the 106th Infantry Division. In the Army Charles quickly distinguished himself by receiving a commendation before entering battle when he and another solider, PFC Alfred Colebourn, captured two escaped German soldiers while stationed in England. From there his unit was deployed to Belgium and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Charles was captured on December 19th, 1944 by the Germans after his squad was killed in a mortar attack. Charles and the rest of the prisoners were sent to a POW camp located in Eastern Germany via train, which was bombed by the Allies because it was thought to contain German soldiers. Eventually Charles and other POWs were put to work in a factory making blankets for German soldiers. They did get some satisfaction from this by making the blankets extra thin and imagining the German soldiers shivering under their blankets. He would end up being sent to a total of three POW camps. While at the last POW camp the POWs noticed that during severe thunder storms the Germans turned off the electric fences. During the next storm, the POWs cut a hole in the fence and escaped.
    3. Charles spent the remaining months of the war with Russian soldiers, our allies in WWII. Charles, who had been reported missing initially in the Greenfield paper after the 106th division was listed as annihilated, returned home aboard the Queen Elizabeth. Charles never talked about the war, the only reason we have this much information is he agreed to be interviewed by one of his grandsons and his heroism was finally documented.
