| 80 | 1 | Mar, 2024 | CARMICHAEL, BURKLE JAY | 423 INF | 4/4/2021 | Easter Sunday 2021 took on additional significance for the fortunate people who knew Burkle “Jay” Carmichael, 97, of Ocala, FL, as he went home to be with the Lord. Another unsung American hero, “BJ” had an incredible life: a decorated WWII Veteran who survived the Battle of the Bulge and the German Stalag IV-B POW camp, a successful businessman who traveled all over the world, but most of all, he was a dutiful husband of 66 years to his wife Jean and his four children. His joy in the later years of his life was undoubtedly his grandchildren. “Papa” was always ready with a word of advice and a game of Gin. He would sincerely listen and empathize, all while “beating the pants off you” at cards. He was quick to smile and offer help if needed. He would often draw from his years of sales experience and say, “treating people with respect and kindness has become increasingly rare… and it"s OK to be rare.” Like many Veterans, he didn"t talk much about his time in WWII until later in life; both out of a humility for his service to his country as well as a desire to not relive a horrific time. But as he did pass along those stories of friendship, pain and triumph, his eyes would clearly tell you there was more. To say he will be greatly missed doesn"t begin to capture it. He was firm in his faith and knew he was heading home to Heaven. He would often say he was content to stay here on earth working until the Lord called him home. And work he did. He was an avid gardener and woodworker, volunteered and attended regularly at Christ the King Anglican Church, and spoke to numerous schools both local and statewide about his experiences in WWII. It has been said that you will never know how big of shadow you cast on others in life. His reach will be felt for years to come. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Bliss Carmichael; and his oldest son, Burkle Jay Carmichael Jr. He is survived by Michael and Becki Carmichael, Rory Carmichael, and Julie and Steve Dalton. As well as 15 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. | |

| 72 | 3 | Nov, 2016 | COOK, FRANCIS J. | 422/A | 8/30/2016 | The Cook family is deeply saddened to report that my dad, Francis Cook, died peacefully today at 2:20 p.m. at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. Late last night, he required emergency dialysis complicated by low blood pressure. We learned early this morning that he had not regained consciousness, but the doctors were holding out hope. Mary Lynn, Kimberly and I immediately went to the hospital. Shortly after arrival, it was determined that he had hours to live. The three of us talked to him for over five hours, held his hands, hugged and comforted him . . . hoping he just might somehow be aware of us and hear our words. We"ll never know, but it gave us a chance to tell him how much we loved him and how much he meant to our family. Over the past twelve days, we were so fortunate and blessed to have my dad see: his 2-month-old great-granddaughter, Rowan Frances Drogos, for the first time; Rowan"s parents Lauren and Justin, who drove over from Chicago; Kimberly Cook, who arrived late Sunday night from LA. Shortly before my dad passed away, his longtime neighbor and very close friend, Rick Forzano, Sr. showed up at the hospital in his wheelchair. Seeing the two of them together at this time meant so much to all of us. Tears all around. My dad stopped breathing about 20 minutes after they arrived. Please share this with others who may be missing on my list. Reported by his son, Bill | |

| 80 | 2 | Jul, 2024 | COY, JACQUELYN KAY | Non-106th-Vet / Membership Chair | 3/16/2024 | Active in her community, dear mother, grandmother, sister, friend Jacquelyn Kay Sparks Coy, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and dear friend to many, passed away with grace and peace on March 16, 2024, in New Providence, NJ, surrounded by family. She was born on August 12th, 1939, in Rahway, NJ to the late William and Adeline Sparks. Jackie resided in Long Hill Township, and following retirement, moved to Mt. Arlington on Lake Hopatcong and later to Lantern Hill in New Providence. Jackie was married to Dudley F. Coy from 1962 through 1983 and was domestic partner to Harry F. Martin Jr. until his death in 2020. Jackie graduated from Westfield High School and received her bachelor's degree from Lake Erie College for Women and her master's degree in Italian Studies from Middlebury College. She also studied abroad for several years at the University of Florence. Upon her return to the United States, Jackie worked for Banca d'Italia in New York City. A pioneer of the modern woman, Jackie skillfully managed many responsibilities. She was a single mother for much of her parenting life, while simultaneously establishing a successful work career and volunteering in her community. Professionally, she excelled as a life insurance broker and was well respected in the industry by her colleagues and clients. Jackie served as President of the New Jersey Chartered Life Underwriters and Treasurer of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors - Northwest New Jersey. Her community involvement was extensive. She served on the vestry for All Saints Episcopal Church, was a board member for the Long Hill Community Center, served as class parent and scout leader for all three of her children, and she was a member of the Jaycees. For many years, she chaired the Long Hill Township Recreation Committee, where she organized The Run for Independence. In recognition of her many years of community service, Jackie was honored with the Good Scout Award for Outstanding Community Service, presented by Bill Bradley, former Governor of NJ. In later years, she served as President of the Trustees for the Mount Arlington Library and as a Board Member of The Veterans of the 106th Infantry Division. Most recently she served on several committees at Lantern Hill. Jackie gave generously throughout her life - a testament to her love and compassion for others. She contributed both her time and money to numerous causes and organizations, including the Seeing Eye in Morristown, NJ and the Lakes Environmental Association in Bridgton, Maine. She gave even when doing so was challenging, believing that contributing to those in need was a responsibility for all. Above all, Jackie valued time spent with her family, including her three children, Maria Coy, Timothy Coy and Meagan Coy (married to Mitchell Epstein). She was a devoted grandmother to four grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life: Kaitlyn Winn, Arbor Coy, and Alexa and Elise Epstein. Jackie is also survived by her brother William Sparks, Jr. (Grace Sparks) of Cleveland, TX, and Harry's children, Marty, Lisa, and Larissa. Jackie's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her deeply. She will be celebrated for her strength, independence, compassion, and intelligence. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire her family, friends, and the communities she served. | 79 | 3 | Nov, 2023 | CRAMER, CALVIN O. | 106TH | 8/8/2023 | Calvin was born to Oscar J. and Caroline (Schneller) Cramer on May 18, 1926 on Water Street in Prairie du Sac, WI, overlooking the Wisconsin River. After graduation in 1944 from Prairie du Sac High School where he excelled in track, football, and academics, he was drafted into the Army for deployment to the European theater of WWII. He was trained as a replacement infantryman and was assigned to 106th Infantry Division to backfill decimating losses of its units in the Battle of the Bulge. Calvin's timing was such that he joined as the 106th was withdrawn from the front lines and he spent much of his WWII time guarding German POWs. During the summer of 1945 Calvin was on a troop transport in the Atlantic as part of a transfer to the Pacific theater for the invasion of Japan. It was announced onboard that the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan had surrendered. Following the Army, Calvin pursued his education via the GI bill receiving his BS, MS and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He married Patricia (Pat) Louise Herr in June 1952 and they enjoyed a 70-year companionship until her passing earlier in 2023. As a humble beginning, they first lived with Calvin's father at his Prairie du Sac farm but in 1955 they moved to Lodi where they raised their family and spent almost 70 years together. Calvin began teaching at UW-Madison in 1954 as an instructor and joined the faculty in 1959 in the Department of Agricultural Engineering. He taught the design and construction of agricultural buildings, later expanding to courses in the area of construction administration particularly residential construction. He was known by students for having an open office door and a friendly ear who would listen to their questions, concerns, hopes and aspirations. He was voted by the students as the best departmental instructor many times and his colleagues remember him as one who liked to play practical jokes. He retired and was granted emeritus status in 1988. As part of his professional life, he was a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers for more than 65 years and in 1986 he was awarded "Engineer of the Year" by the Wisconsin Section. He also received recognitions from the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin and others. In retirement, he and Pat engaged in a small amount of travel including a trip to WWII cemeteries in Europe where relatives were buried. The last major trip Calvin took was an emotional Badger Honor Flight in 2011. Calvin's retirement years were marked by extensive volunteer work with many local organizations including: the Free Masons of which he was a member for more than 70 years, the American Legion, Lodi Valley Historical Society, Lodi United Methodist Church, Lodi Agricultural Fair, and Good Samaritan Nursing Home. He held a variety of leadership positions in these organizations. Calvin is survived by his children, Ramona (Larry) Wesner (Franklin, WI) and Steven (Kay) Cramer (Lodi, WI), five grandchildren, Eric (Katie) Wesner, Brian (Anna) Wesner, Ethan Cramer, Isaac Cramer, Annaliese Cramer, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother (when he was 12), his father, his wife, Patricia, and all five of his siblings. After living a full and active life, Calvin passed away on Pat's birthday and we believe she summoned him to join her. | |
